Dwyane Wade Said He Left Florida Because Family Wouldn’t Be ‘Accepted’ Or ‘Feel Comfortable’

Former NBA Star Dwyane Wade Moved His Family Out of Florida Due to Concern for Trans-Identifying Child

Former NBA star Dwyane Wade recently revealed that he moved his family out of Florida due to concerns for his trans-identifying child. In an interview with Rachel Nichols on “Headliners,” Wade explained that his family would not feel comfortable in the state due to controversial legislation and politicians, including House Bill 1557.

Advocating for Transgender Rights

Wade and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, have become advocates for transgender rights since their child, Zaya, identified as transgender in 2020. Wade has expressed his support for transgender rights before and has questioned why schools are not educating children on trans issues.

HB 1557: The Parental Rights in Education Bill

HB 1557, also known as the Parental Rights in Education Bill, prohibits educators from discussing sexual orientation or gender identity with children in kindergarten through third grade. Opponents have mischaracterized the bill by dubbing it the “Don’t Say Gay” law. Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis addressed the media portrayal of the bill, stating that there is a massive gulf between what it actually says and what some of the protests are about.

Supporting Family Decisions

Wade emphasized that he has to make decisions for his family, not just personal, individual decisions. He stated that while the tax situation and having Wade County in Florida are great, his family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there. He made the decision to move his family out of the state to ensure their safety and comfort.
