Dwayne Haskins’ Parents Won’t Attend Friday Funeral, Will Hold Multiple Services

The family of the late Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins will hold multiple memorial services after Haskins was killed while trying to cross a South Florida highway in the early morning hours of April 9.

The funeral is scheduled for April 22, but Haskins’ parents will not be attending, stating that they have not met Haskins’ wife — Kalabrya Haskins — and do not want to first meet her at their son’s funeral.

“We have never met or spoken to the wife and we didn’t want our son’s funeral service to be the place we met her for the first time,” Haskins parents said in a joint statement.

Another funeral service for Haskins will be held on April 23 in New Jersey, and a memorial service will be held on April 24 in Maryland.

“We have had such an overwhelming outpouring of love for our son since the news broke of our loss,” Haskins parents said, according to WUSA9. “Anyone who knew Dwayne knows he worked exceptionally hard to achieve such a high level of success at such a young age. He was touched by so many people on his journey to being a standout athlete and we are grateful to all of them. This pain is unimaginable and we appreciate everyone who shares in our heartbreak.”

In the early morning of April 9, Haskins was struck by a dump truck and one other vehicle on Interstate 595 in South Florida, killing the quarterback. At the time of the initial reporting, the reason for Haskins walking on the interstate was unknown. On Wednesday, TMZ reported that Haskins’ wife had called 911 the morning of his death, telling the dispatcher that Haskins had called her after running out of gas on the interstate.

“He said he was going to call me back after he finished putting the gas in,” Kalabrya Haskins told the 911 dispatcher. Kalabrya called 911 after Haskins did not call her back.

“I kept calling and kept calling,” Kalabyra told the dispatch officer. “He wasn’t answering. Eventually, after 10 minutes of calling the phone, eventually it cut off. It’s not working now. I had his location. I just want somebody to go in the area and see if his car is there and if he’s OK and if anything happened to him.”

On the call, the dispatch officer informed Kalabrya that there was an “incident on the highway.”

“I don’t want you to panic, but I’m going to be honest with you,” the dispatcher said. “We do have an incident on the highway — but I can’t confirm if that’s your husband or not.”

Haskins died from his injuries at the scene of the accident. Also on Wednesday, TMZ reported that Haskins was actually struck by two vehicles on the night of his death.

Haskins was drafted by the now-Washington Commanders in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft after a standout 2018 season at Ohio State. He struggled in his first two NFL seasons, starting just 13 games for Washington. Haskins signed with the Steelers prior to the 2021 season.
