Douglas Murray: The State of New York State? Terrifying!

This week was Kathy Hochul’s first state of the state address since winning an election in her own right. Not only was it Kathy Hochul’s first state of state address since winning an election in her own right, but also mine. Keynote addresses on the future state of our state should not be missed, it is true. But are they?

It’s often said that making laws is like making sausages: best not to look. Well after Tuesday in Albany I can tell you that I’d rather spend a month watching lawyers making sausages than suffer another hour of Gov Hochul making non-announcements.

It isn’t that Hochul is a bad public speaker. It’s just that she’s the same as almost every other one. She has the same intonation and hand gestures as every politician.

She told us, for instance, that she was happy to tell those of you who were able to attend the chamber in Albany. “We will do the hard things — the necessary things.” Do you mean changing bail reform to actually lock up repeat offenders? It appears not. The Governor stated that New York has seen a rise in crime. “created by a convergence of factors.” Ah. Ah.

Soon, she was quoting Eleanor Roosevelt. “We will build a new world. And we will be courageous.” That’s quite the promise. And what were Hochul’s courageous insights? She told us all that “transitioning to the future, we know that future belongs to our children.”

It was only a matter of moments that I began to nod off from my viewing gallery seat. Maybe it was the heat of the building. Maybe it was hot air. After she said it, I had the nerve to look at the record again.

Hochul started by celebrating the fact that this year’s address was given to a full chamber. COVID restrictions meant last year’s address was delivered to an empty one. This year, however, the floor was filled with lawmakers. Representatives from both parties gave their support to the Governor For her banalities, she received standing ovations repeatedly. They were especially excited to see her. She announced her policy on mental healthcare, which she correctly identified as a New York problem.

But while I watched everyone standing and clapping and hugging the governor on her way in and out I just kept asking myself the questions they didn´t seem to be bothering with down below. Like what does it mean to tackle a few thousand people who live rough in New York if you don’t even mention the fact that many times that number of Illegal migrants have arrived in NYC in the past few months. Why talk about getting a few thousand people into shelter when you can’t even mention the thousands of illegal migrants now being put up in — and trashing — the city’s hotels?

It’s the same with every “major” Hochul announced policy. While Hochul warned of the dangers of opioids and the problem of drug addiction, she didn’t mention the fact that New York has become a safe haven for legal marijuana-taking. How can we talk about mental health in New York and not acknowledge the effects marijuana has on young developing brains. Or the harm that school lockdowns did for all NY children? None of these questions were answered.

Hochul actually stated: “To accomplish this we have to get it done.” I started to feel grateful she hadn’t given the address outside. Birds would have fallen from the sky.

However, I was always awakened by a persistent feeling. Where was the public? Where were the representatives who had spent the morning enjoying buffets and gregarious hand-holding each other, the people the Governor was referring to?

Well, the public was there. That’s right. It didn’t matter if it was COVID or something else. “security” It seems that representatives don’t have to interact with constituents anymore. It is possible for legislators and lobbyists to all mingle around the magnificent State Capitol building. Some of the Cuomo gang members have even resigned as lobbyists.

You had to walk outside to meet the public. There were hundreds of protestors outside the state capitol. Some protestors were concerned about affordable housing. Many were also protesting vaccine mandates. I spoke to some of them afterwards and they said they hadn’t been able to get within a million miles of Hochul.

She managed to avoid contact with the mass.

Some were able to wave their banners in front of some of their representatives while they walked past them on the streets. The public was virtually unable to make their voices heard. And I’m sorry but that is rotten. This is the reason the separation between the governing and the governed classes has never felt more significant. It is a state.

Many believe their concerns are not being addressed by Hochul.

Slippery when ‘Vette

It turns out, President Biden was up for the old “holding onto secret documents” Trick As well. Though it seems that rather than keeping his top-secret documents in his wife’s closet, he keeps them, among other places, by his Corvette in Wilmington. How did he assure the nation yesterday when asked this question? He said that he kept his Corvette locked up in a garage.

We are grateful for this. If there’s one thing the Chinese, Russians and any other spy agency in the world have never figured out, it’s how do you open a garage door. They are especially common in Wilmington. It baffles them. Even as I type, the Kremlin continues to try and find a way in.

Biden is being snubbed by this stream of accusations. It certainly helps to discredit his case against his predecessor. However, if I look at the media that this story was leaked to, I see dirty Democrat fingerprints all over. We know that there are many people within the party trying to get Biden out of the race before the next election. And they know they’ve got a short time to stop him.

What’s their plan for the future? Mayor Pete is their great savior. Governor Newsom? All the best with that.
