Donald Glover Says Tina Fey Told Him He Was A ‘Diversity’ Hire On ‘30 Rock’

Professional Donald Glover recalled an incident from his early career in which Tina Fey claimed he was a” variety” hire for the well-liked sitcom” 30 Rock” in an interview that was released on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old actor discussed it during an interview with GQ. “There is no animosity between us or anything like that, but [Tina Fey] said it herself. … It was a diversity thing. The last two people who were fighting for the job were me and Kenya Barris,” Glover recalled of being hired as a writer for “30 Rock.”

Barris is the brains behind the popular humor” Black – ish” and some subsidiary endeavors.

It wasn’t until later that I realized it was between me and [ Barris ]. He once hit me and said,” I’ve hated’ve you for years!” Glaver went on.

Glover claimed that during that time in his early career, he struggled with sham syndrome, which suggested that the man didn’t feel equipped to have landed the job. ” It didn’t feel like I should be there at all. Every night during pain dreams, I would perform cartwheels on top of a New York building while the other writers kept an eye on me.

The actor mentioned believing he was hired because he was black before, during a 2018 profile in The New Yorker. 

” I questioned: Am I being hired merely because I’m black’m?” Technically speaking, the answer was yes after he claimed Fey told him that money from NBC’s Diversity’s Initiative had basically” made him complimentary.”

The comic show” 30 Rock” has received criticism in the past. Fey commented on the removal of shows that featured roles in Blackface in 2020.

“As we strive to do the work and do better in regards to race in America, we believe that these episodes featuring actors in race-changing makeup are best taken out of circulation,” Fey wrote in a letter to the platforms that streamed or sold “30 Rock,” as The Daily Wire previously reported. 

I now realize that using these images with” goal” is not a free pass for white people. I’m sorry’m they hurt you in any way. No child who enjoys comic needs to come across these tropes in the future and be offended by their ugliness. I appreciate NBCUniversal granting this demand.
