Former CNN host Don Lemon was arrested by federal officials after attending an anti-ICE protest that disrupted a Sunday service at Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, on jan. 18.Authorities say he violated federal law during the event; Lemon maintains he was there as a journalist reporting on the protest and posted a video saying he only interviewed participants, the pastor, and church members. Protesters had accused the pastor of ties to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and chanted “ICE out!” The Justice Department had earlier dropped requests for arrest warrants and a Minnesota magistrate judge had previously rejected charges, but federal authorities moved to arrest him Thursday evening; he is scheduled to appear in Los Angeles court on Friday.
Don Lemon arrested by federal officials over Minnesota church ‘ICE Out’ protest
Federal officials have arrested former CNN host Don Lemon for his presence at an anti-ICE protest in a Minnesota church during a Sunday service.
The Thursday evening arrest, reported by the New York Times, comes after Lemon said he was there in his capacity as a journalist to report on the protest. He’s charged with violating federal law during the event.
On Jan. 18, protesters stormed Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, asserting the pastor was connected to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Protesters began shouting, “ICE out!”
“Once the protest started in the church, we did an act of journalism, which was report on it and talk to the people involved, including the pastor, members of the church, and members of the organization,” Lemon said in a recent video posted to social media. “That’s it. That’s called journalism.”
WHAT IS THE FACE ACT? FEDERAL CHARGES FOR MINNESOTA CHURCH PROTEST COULD COME BY SUNDAY
The Justice Department had dropped its arrest warrant requests for Lemon and several others involved in the protest earlier this week, after a Minnesota magistrate judge had also previously rejected the charges against Lemon.
He’s now scheduled to appear in a Los Angeles court on Friday morning.
