Disney Enlisted ‘Cultural Consultant’ Team For ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’ Depictions Of Native Americans
Disney Is trying to avoid cultural insensitivity towards Native Americans In its latest remake “Peter Pan.”
Actress who portrays Tiger Lily in the movie “Peter Pan & Wendy“, which will be streaming directly to Disney+ in April,” revealed during an interview that the production had hired a “cultural consultant team” To omit stereotypical representations of Native Americans in this film.
Alyssa Wapanatâhk, who is of Cree descent, Submitted NativeViewpoint.com said that the crew attempted to be culturally sensitive since many people considered the original animated version problematic. Tiger Lily, the chief of the Disney animated classic from 1953, speaks broken English. He calls Peter Pan his “pale face brother” He refers to himself as “a” “red man.”
When asked about Disney addressing the perceived problems in the original film, Wapanatâhk said she’s happy with how the new version turned out.
“My thoughts on Disney’s past is that I hope they leave it where it is … and I think they will,” She spoke to the publication. “I watched all the Peter Pan films. There were some films that did not do us justice for sure.”
“When I first read that script, I could see the change,” Wapanatâhk continued. “Once I was actually working with production, I noticed it even more, and it got better and better.” She continued to describe the experience. “cultural consultant team” NativeViewpoint spotted Dawn Jackson (Saginaw Chippewa), as well as Dr. Kevin Lewis, (Minisitkwan Lake Cree Nation).
“The first time they told me that there was a cultural consultant team, I thought I need to be part of that team you know, all hands on deck,” She said. “Then I was a part of that team and whenever we needed to discuss things, I was there. I really felt like they were trying.”
She also mentioned how David Lowery, the film’s director was supportive of the crew throughout filming.

“I received an email from [Lowery] and he wrote, ‘Hey, I know that you’re Cree. Why don’t you bring your Cree background into this character? I was like, ‘Wow, Yeah, I’m there.’ That was at the point where I thought, ‘Okay this needs to be done perfectly,'” Wapanatâhk said.
“All of these different films and TV shows are coming out now that are done so well,” The actress continued. “I’m seeing all these Native producers and Native directors, Native writers, and Native actors and they are all giving us their best work.”
The new “Peter & Wendy” The trailer received mixed reviews online. Some Disney fans are enthusiastic about the new story, while others have reservations about Jude Law playing the role of Captain Hook. The movie was also sent to streaming instead of being released theatrically.
