DeSantis walks back earlier comments on Ukraine War, calls Putin a ‘war criminal’

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) declared that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a “war criminal” while walking back his earlier comments about the War in Ukraine.

DeSantis, a rumored candidate for president in 2024, stated last week that continuing the war was in the United States’ best interests and that it was” regional dispute” when speaking to Fox News host Tucker Carlson. The Florida governor appeared to retract his remarks in response to criticism from foreign policy eagles, including most members of the Republican Party, saying in an interview with Piers Morgan that Putin was a” battle crime” who” should be held responsible.”

He said of Putin in general,” I think he’s got great interests.” He may be angry toward the United States, but from what we’ve seen, he lacks the typical capacity to understand his goals. Therefore, he is essentially a gas station with numerous nuclear weapons, and one thing we could do better is make use of U.S. power sources. Sulfur .”

He continued by saying that his remark that the war was a” territorial dispute” was” mischaracterized ,” but added that he could have been more precise.

Well, I believe it has been mischaracterized. Clearly, Russia invaded( the previous summer ), so that was incorrect, DeSantis said. That was incorrect when they invaded Crimea and took that in 2014.

He continued,” What I’m referring to is where the battle is currently taking place, which is in the eastern border area of Donbas and Crimea, and you have a scenario where Russia has had that.” They had, but I don’t say genuinely. There are many people of Russian descent that. It wasn’t that I believed Russia had a right to that, and if I may have made that more explicit, I may have done it. That’s some hard fighting, which is what I was referring to.

He then made an attempt to get the middle ground, implying that he thought the current level of American involvement was adequate and that the country don’t send troops.

The bigger point, in his opinion, is that Russia is not demonstrating the capacity to seize control of Ukraine, overthrow the government, or unquestionably harm NATO. It’s a good thing, I say. Simply put, I don’t believe that level of interest warrants further role. There shouldn’t be any National troops involved, in my opinion. However, the notion that I believe Russia was apparently justified is absurd.

The follow-up was received with a mingled response. Sen. Lindsey Graham( R – SC ) praised DeSantis for his remarks about Putin, calling them” spot on.”

Carlson wasn’t impressed when DeSantis sent him his war-related commentary last week.

Carlson criticized those who, according to him,” give in to the news media, who are made to take over whatever childish phrase they’ve come up with this year ,” even though he wasn’t explicitly referring to DeSantis. Now, in jest, he declared,” Vladimir Putin is a war crime.” The New York Times reported that his remarks came hours after DeSantis'” battle legal” remarks were made public.
