Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Vows to Remove Woke Culture from the Military
During a campaign swing through South Carolina, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a former Navy lieutenant who served in Iraq, made a bold promise. He declared that if he wins his 2024 White House bid, he will start “ripping all the woke out of the military.”
Speaking in Columbia, S.C., DeSantis unveiled his five-point “Mission First” plan to eradicate progressive politics from the armed forces. Under President Joe Biden, the Pentagon has faced heavy criticism from conservatives for promoting beliefs such as radical environmentalism, transgender ideology, critical race theory, and imposing the COVID vaccine mandate. There have also been concerns about events like drag shows being held on military bases.
“[The U.S. military] has been infected with the woke mind virus,” said DeSantis, who served as a legal adviser to SEAL Team One and spent time at Guantanamo Bay during his seven years of service after graduating from Harvard Law. ”It’s creating a situation in which great warriors have been driven away, and recruiting is at an all-time low post the abolition of the draft in the Vietnam conflict.”
DeSantis specifically criticized the Navy’s decision to appoint an active-duty drag queen as one of the faces of its online recruitment efforts. He argued that this sends the wrong message to America’s adversaries, stating, ”When China sees the U.S. Navy using drag queens to recruit people, they are laughing in our face. Our enemies are whetting their appetite because they’re seeing America take its eye off the ball.”
DeSantis’ Plan to Restore the Military’s Focus
DeSantis outlined the most pressing issues he would tackle:
- Recognizing and rectifying recent mistakes, such as the vaccine mandate that led to the departure of thousands of service members. DeSantis promised to reinstate them with back pay.
- Putting an end to prioritizing social and environmental objectives over the military’s core mission. DeSantis emphasized the importance of focusing on lethality, readiness, and capabilities rather than political agendas like the Green New Deal.
- Purging the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) bureaucracy from the Pentagon. DeSantis believes that social experimentation and woke ideology have no place in the military, as they divide people into different groups instead of fostering unity.
- Abolishing drag shows and rejecting gender ideology and transgenderism in the military.
- Ensuring that promotions are based on merit rather than identity politics. DeSantis criticized curricula in military academies that promote political agendas like critical race theory and emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards.
DeSantis also highlighted the need to bolster recruitment, which has seen a significant decline. He expressed concern over veterans hesitating to encourage their children or grandchildren to join the military due to the focus on social experimentation and woke culture.
If elected as Commander-In-Chief in 2024, DeSantis pledged to remove the woke culture from the military and refocus on mission accomplishment. He emphasized the importance of boosting morale and recruiting to make the military an appealing choice once again.
