Florida Governor Suspends Democratic Mayor for Alleged Voter Fraud
“The right to vote is sacred in our country and in Florida, and we have zero tolerance for any attempts to undermine the democratic process.”
Last week, Anthony DeFillipo, the mayor of North Miami Beach, was arrested for allegedly committing voter fraud in several elections. DeFillipo is accused of living outside of the city limits, which would violate the city’s charter and mean he committed voter fraud by driving to North Miami Beach to vote three times. The charges carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
On Monday, Governor Ron DeSantis suspended DeFillipo with an executive order. The mayor’s lawyers called the charges a “political hit job.”
Living Outside the City Limits
According to the Miami Herald, DeFillipo allegedly lives in neighboring Davie, where he was recorded in cell phone data driving from home to vote in North Miami Beach in August, October, and November.
Criticism from Democrats
The move by DeSantis comes as he faces criticism from Democrats for reportedly flying migrants from border states to Sacramento, California. Democratic governor Gavin Newsom (Calif.) on Monday called DeSantis a “small, pathetic man” and threatened kidnapping charges.
Zero Tolerance for Voter Fraud
Governor DeSantis made it clear that voter fraud will not be tolerated in Florida. “The right to vote is sacred in our country and in Florida, and we have zero tolerance for any attempts to undermine the democratic process,” he said.
