Gov. Ron DeSantis Dismisses Nikki Haley’s Fundraising Success
During a campaign event in Waukee, Iowa, Gov. Ron DeSantis expressed his skepticism towards former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley’s impressive fundraising efforts, which amounted to $24 million in the last three months before the 2024 Republican presidential primary’s Iowa caucuses.
“She has been able to get massive funding from, you know, liberal Democrats, even in places like California,” DeSantis told reporters. “Liberal Wall Street executives, they’ve been raising huge money for her there.”
DeSantis, who has not disclosed his own fundraising numbers for the fourth quarter of 2023, argued that Haley’s financial supporters are not backing her because they believe she would bring about significant change.
“They’re doing that because they know that she’s somebody that they would be able to control,” DeSantis explained. ”And so, my view is to do what’s right. Don’t try to chase what donors are wanting to do and that’s what I’ve done my entire time in office.”
Haley raised $11 million in the third quarter, while former President Donald Trump raised $45.5 million and DeSantis raised $15 million. Trump’s fourth-quarter data has not been released yet, but it is rumored that a significant portion has been spent on legal fees.
Looking ahead to the final debate before the caucuses, DeSantis emphasized the stark contrast between himself and Haley.
“There’ll be a very clear contrast between somebody who, by her admission, she was inspired to run for office, not by Ronald Reagan or Margaret Thatcher, but by Hillary Clinton,” DeSantis stated. “She’s got an agenda that’s really very similar, almost like the Republican version of Hillary.”
“That’s not what people want to see,” he added. ”They want to see people that are going to stand and fight.”
DeSantis is currently on a campaign tour in Iowa, hosting 10 events in the state between Wednesday and Sunday.
According to RealClearPolitics, Trump maintains a significant lead over both DeSantis and Haley in Iowa, with 51% of the vote. However, DeSantis and Haley are in a closer competition, with 19% and 16% respectively.
