DeSantis rejects blogger registration proposal: ‘I don’t control every single bill’

DeSantis noted that the legislature has the right to submit bills. But he also stressed that he disagrees with all of the arguments and that he opposes the practice. “Information Dissemination” The bill has been met with national opposition even from Republicans.

“I see these people filing bills, and then there’s articles with my face on the article saying that, ‘Oh, bloggers are going to have to register for the state,’ and it’s like, attributing it to me,” DeSantis spoke Tuesday at a press conference. “That’s not anything that I’ve ever supported. I don’t support.”

“Every person in the legislature can file bills,” DeSantis added. “I don’t control every single bill that has been filed.”

Jason Brodeur (Republican state senator) proposed this bill. The law would have required bloggers to register with either the Florida Office of Legislative Services, or the Commission on Ethics. The bill would require them to report monthly on who is paying them.

The bill defines blogs as “a website or webpage that hosts any bloggers and is frequently updated with opinion, commentary, or business content.” A $25 per day fine and a $2,500 maximum for each post could be imposed if you fail to register. The law applies to state legislators, governors’ Cabinet members, and bloggers.

“Paid bloggers are lobbyists who write instead of talk. They both are professional electioneers. If lobbyists have to register and report, why shouldn’t paid bloggers,” Brodeur told Florida Politics.
