DeSantis planning productive legislative session in Florida as 2024 looms

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), has teased an ambitious state agenda legislative Session after Being reelected By nearly 20 percentage point last year, the state’s executive.

DeSantis will seek to implement major changes in school choice and gun laws. He also plans to modify the requirements of the death penalty.

The proposal includes making harboring illegal immigrants a third degree felony. This could lead to up to five years imprisonment. If the immigrant is younger than 18, the penalty can be increased to a second-degree crime, which could result in up to fifteen years imprisonment. DeSantis claimed that increased penalties will be used to stop human smuggling from the Sunshine State.

DeSantis also suggested other proposals, including expanding school choice through legislation to allow K-12 students vouchers to schools. Expanding gun rights to include constitutional gun carry would enable legal gun owners and permit them to legally carry firearms with no permit.

Florida’s governor wants to reform the state’s libel laws. The Governor argues that media organizations are too free to defame people according to current statutes.

“Current law does not provide adequate protection for everyday Floridians to protect themselves from defamatory or libelous speech by news organizations,” Governor’s Office said In a press release from last month.

Reforms of capital punishment laws will be DeSantis’ top priority during the legislative session. Governor DeSantis wants the death penalty to be imposed by a supermajority rather than a unanimous jury.
