DeSantis grapples with what’s next after third Republican debate
Gov. Ron DeSantis Faces Challenges in 2024 Republican Primary
MIAMI — Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) breathed a sigh of relief after a strong performance in the third 2024 Republican debate in Miami. However, his long-term strategy is being put to the test as former President Donald Trump continues to dominate the primary and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley poses a strong competition for second place.
Winners and Losers of Third GOP Matchup in Miami
According to University of Michigan debate coach Aaron Kall, there are doubts that DeSantis’ performance in the debate will significantly boost his chances against Trump in the upcoming Iowa caucuses on Jan. 15. Kall attributes this to Trump’s refusal to participate in the process and the extended duration between the debates.
However, University of Iowa politics professor Timothy Hagel believes that Iowa is less about the debates and more about demonstrating the ability to win and get things done. Hagel acknowledges that many voters still favor Trump, but emphasizes that DeSantis and Haley’s success will depend on whether the not-Trump voters can unite behind one of them to challenge Trump’s dominance.
DeSantis’ communications director, Andrew Romeo, remains confident in the governor’s campaign, especially as the holiday distractions fade away. Romeo suggests that public polling in Iowa during October and November may not accurately reflect the outcome of the Iowa caucus, and advises to follow the money instead. He points out that Trump has been spending a significant amount attacking DeSantis, indicating that the governor’s campaign is gaining momentum.
DeSantis himself describes his priority during the debate as directly articulating his vision to Republicans, rather than focusing on his opponents or the moderators. However, his national primary support has remained at 14% and his support in Iowa has stayed at 17%, according to RealClearPolitics.
Despite the criticism DeSantis has directed towards Haley, Romeo insists that the primary is still a two-man race between Trump and the governor. Haley’s press secretary, Ken Farnaso, counters by highlighting her strong stance on various issues and claiming that she poses a formidable challenge to both Trump and President Joe Biden.
In a memo, the DeSantis campaign asserts that the governor appeals to both the Trump and non-Trump sides of the party. They argue that if DeSantis were to drop out of the race, his supporters would largely move to Trump, effectively ending the primary. The campaign also reveals their extensive presence in Iowa and their significant media placement, indicating their commitment to the campaign.
On the other hand, the Haley campaign criticizes DeSantis for spending $100 million since his announcement, suggesting that it has been wasted. They argue that even if DeSantis performs well in Iowa, his weak numbers in New Hampshire and South Carolina will hinder his overall chances.
According to RealClearPolitics, Trump maintains a significant lead in Iowa with 47% support, followed by DeSantis at 17%, Haley at 14%, Sen. Tim Scott at 7%, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy at 5%, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 4%.

What strategies can Governor Ron DeSantis employ to distinguish himself from the shadow of former President Donald Trump while still maintaining support from Trump’s loyal base?
Voters to pay attention to momentum and grassroots support leading up to the event.
One of DeSantis’ main challenges in the primary race is navigating his relationship with former President Donald Trump. As a popular figure among Republican voters, Trump continues to hold significant influence over the party. DeSantis has managed to gain Trump’s endorsement in the past, which has undoubtedly boosted his campaign. However, as the primary heats up, the governor will have to find a way to distinguish himself from Trump’s shadow while also maintaining the support of Trump’s loyal base.
Another obstacle for DeSantis is the formidable competition from former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. Haley is a well-respected figure within the Republican Party and has garnered support from both the establishment and grassroots conservatives. Her experience in foreign policy and her ability to articulate her conservative values have positioned her as a strong contender for second place in the primary race. DeSantis will need to showcase his own accomplishments and policy positions in order to stand out and gain an advantage over Haley.
One area where DeSantis has excelled is as governor of Florida. His handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, his focus on economic growth, and his conservative policies have made him popular among Republicans in his home state. However, DeSantis’ challenge will be to translate that support into a nationwide appeal. He needs to convince primary voters across the country that he has the experience and track record necessary to lead the nation.
In terms of strategy, DeSantis needs to find the right balance between his conservative base and appealing to a broader audience. While his conservative policies have endeared him to the party’s base, he will need to broaden his appeal in order to win over moderate and independent voters. This delicate balancing act will require him to navigate sensitive issues such as immigration, climate change, and social issues with finesse.
The road to the Republican nomination in 2024 is filled with challenges for Gov. Ron DeSantis. As he faces the dominance of former President Donald Trump and competition from Nikki Haley, he must find a way to distinguish himself while maintaining the support of Trump’s base. His record as governor of Florida is a strong asset, but he needs to demonstrate nationwide appeal and the ability to navigate sensitive issues. With the Iowa caucuses just around the corner, DeSantis’ long-term strategy and ability to overcome these challenges will be put to the test.
