Democrats Suddenly Agree With Trump: Haiti Is An ‘S-hole Country’
The article discusses recent political developments related to immigration, particularly focusing on the treatment of Haiti and TPS (Temporary Protected Status) holders. It highlights the contrast between past statements where Haiti was labeled as a “sh-thole country” and current calls from Democrats for permanent residency and citizenship for TPS beneficiaries, despite earlier characterization. The Supreme Court recently clarified that “temporary” does not mean “permanent,” reaffirming the president’s authority to revoke TPS status. Democrats are now advocating for these migrants to gain full citizenship, revealing a shift from previous rhetoric. The piece also critiques the media and political responses to Trump’s comments, emphasizing the inconsistency in attitudes toward Haiti’s reputation and the definition of “sh-thole.” The author, Eddie Scarry, questions the narrative and underscores the ongoing debate over immigration policies and perceptions.
Every Democrat who insists it’s a deeply inhumane offense to send Haitians temporarily in the U.S. back to their country should be required to admit what they previously denied: that Haiti and so many others like it really are, as President Trump so eloquently put it, “sh-thole countries.”
The Supreme Court ruled this week that the word “temporary” actually doesn’t mean “permanent” and the executive does have the authority to either extend a migrant’s permission to remain in the United States under temporary protected status (TPS), or not, and therefore order his removal. That the issue even had to be settled by the Supreme Court reveals how little respect the left has for our immigration laws, but it’s not like they pretend to have any as it is.
Democrats, having fought snaggletooth and press-on nail to keep their precious, destitute foreigners here (new voting blocs, as they like to see them), are now openly calling for not only the permanent stay of these “temporary” migrants, but their full citizenship.
“We have a moral duty to protect TPS holders,” said Democrat Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts after the ruling, “and provide this vulnerable group with protections and a permanent pathway to citizenship in our country.”
Democrat Rep. Nydia Velázquez of New York likewise said, “TPS holders belong here” and called on Congress to “create a pathway to citizenship.”
My oh my, how quickly things have changed since these same people were swearing up and down that Haiti and other Third World hellscapes were actually pristine lands of milk and honey. Recall the 2018 hysteria of Trump Term 1 when the president was rumored to have referred to Haiti and other comparable non-destinations as “sh-thole countries.”
The whole media and Democrat Party acted as if they had to pause their Habitat for Humanity projects to share a cry. They leapt to their feet to call Trump — what else? — raaaacist! That went on for what felt like 60 years, with TV people diligently shoving microphones in the mouths of Republican lawmakers demanding to know whether they also agreed that Haiti, renowned for its world-class judicial system and advanced plumbing system, was a sh-thole.
Though the president denied using the reported language, choosing where your country accepts people from is no more controversial than choosing what foods you want to put in your body. Given a choice between a steamed lobster tail and the puddles of paste that Ethiopian restaurants serve, I choose the lobster. And so apparently would Democrats.
With fond memory, let’s harken back to CNN’s Anderson Cooper choking back tears to declare that he had “never met a Haitian who isn’t strong.” He went on to say that strength is required for Haitians who “survive in a place where the government has often abandoned its people, where opportunities are few and where Mother Nature has punished the people far more than anyone should ever be punished.”
So is it a sh-thole or not? It can’t be both.
If it’s not, like they said before, there’s no reason these people can’t be sent back. But even if it is, they can be and they should be. That’s what “temporary” means.
