Democrats nominate candidates for competitive Iowa House seats
Democrats selected candidates for two competitive House races they hope to win in November. In Iowa’s first district, former state Rep. Christina Bohannan was chosen to challenge GOP Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks; Bohannan has taught at the University of iowa and previously served in the Iowa House. This is her third attempt at the seat, after close losses in 2022 and 2024, with the latest race decided by just one percentage point.
In Iowa’s third district, Democrats nominated state Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott to run against GOP Rep.Zach Nunn. Trump won that district by four percentage points in 2024. Both matchups are viewed as potential gains for Democrats this election cycle.
Democrats picked their candidates for two competitive House districts on Tuesday that will be vital to the party’s efforts to flip control of the chamber this November.
Democrats nominated former state Rep. Christina Bohannan to run against GOP Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa’s first congressional district. Bohannan has taught at the University of Iowa College of Law and served as a state representative in Iowa from 2021 to 2023.

This is Bohannan’s third try for the seat after losing to Miller-Meeks in 2022 and 2024. The 2024 contest, however, was decided by only one percentage point, even as President Donald Trump carried the seat by eight percentage points.
In Iowa’s third congressional district, Democrats nominated state Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott against GOP Rep. Zach Nunn. Trump carried the seat by four percentage points over former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.
Trone Garriott is a Lutheran minister and has served in the Iowa Senate since 2020. Nunn was first elected to the seat in 2022.
Both races are seen as potential pick-up opportunities for Democrats this November.
