Democrats Must Call Out Racist Attacks Against Clarence Thomas

Two things about Clarence Thomas are consistent over his three-decade tenure on the Supreme Court’s associate justice bench: his unwavering commitment to conservative jurisprudence as well as the nearly constant racist attacks directed at him by his Left. This week, another disgusting smear was leveled against him — this time on the floor of the Georgia State Senate as that body debated erecting a statue of America’s second black justice.

This must be the last time it happens. It can only be guaranteed by Democrats.

Emanuel Jones, State Senator, used the occasion for the debate to say the following: “I’m just trying to tell you what we have in the African American community when we talk about a person of color that goes back historically to the days of slavery and that person betraying his own community – we have a term in the black community. That term that we use is called ‘Uncle Tom.’ An Uncle Tom … talks about a person who back during the days of slavery sold his soul to the slave masters.”

Jones stated that he didn’t know whether Uncle Tom was fiction or factual and did not even know where the term originated. Let’s set to one side the fact that Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is a seminal work of American literature that we might expect an elected official to be aware of, why didn’t his staff check? This guy walked onto the floor of the state senate and announced that he has no idea what he’s talking about, but Clarence Thomas is bad, or something. 

This is not a new phenomenon, especially after the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. “Uncle Clarence” Trended on Twitter even though he wasn’t one of the five justices who ended Roe. This is also what happened when Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) gave the GOP rebuttal to Joe Biden’s 2021 address to congress and “Uncle Tim” trended. We see a lot of sexist and offensive attacks on black conservatives that are based on the color of their skin. It has nothing to do the content of their characters.

There are no details about what Thomas did to allegedly sell black people out. Instead, the argument is that any black person refusing to adhere to the Left-wing ideology the Democrat Party has committed betrayal of their race. Why then do Democrats and their media allies ignore these racist smears not only against Scott and Thomas, but also against other black conservatives like Rep. Byron Donalds (R.FL), who was treated the exact same way when he was elected speaker of the House.

Although it may sound harsh and blunt, this is what it means: Unfortunately, there are times when society loses its sense of decency. There are many jokes about prison rape. It’s a carve out, rape gets to be amusing because we have disdain for the victim. That’s what Clarence Thomas has dealt with for three decades. We know that mocking people on the basis of their skin color is always wrong, but the Left’s disdain keeps the joke in circulation. 

It has to stop. This will only happen if Democrat leaders Joe Biden, Kamala, and Kamala Harir come out and declare that there is no room for racial attacks or insults in their party. That shouldn’t be a heavy lift. This particular kind of vile racist behavior is designed to prevent black Americans embracing conservative ideas.

Some people argue that the term should be used. “Uncle Tom” Should be policing only by blacks, but this is not acceptable. All Americans should be aware that racism is racism, regardless of their skin color. There is no way to categorize Sen. Jones’ use of ‘Uncle Tom’ Thomas is not to be described as an insult against his race. Jones could have opposed a statue to a white conservative justice if this were a debate, but it’s unfathomable that Jones would on the basis his race.

For far too long, these racist smears of Thomas and other black conservatives have been part of our discourse. It is not a gray area, it’s literally black and white. It is disgusting to turn a blind eyes to this problem as a nation. Democrats must demand that this stop if they want to continue their big talk about racism.
