Democrats target vulnerable Republicans with attack ads over Speaker Johnson election.
House Democrats Target Vulnerable Republicans Over Election of Mike Johnson as Speaker
House Democrats are launching a fierce campaign against vulnerable Republicans who elected Mike Johnson as their newest speaker. They accuse GOP lawmakers of appointing a “MAGA Republican extremist” for political gain. The Congressional Integrity Project (CIP) has launched a national ad campaign targeting 18 vulnerable Republicans representing districts won by President Joe Biden in 2020. The ads specifically criticize their support for Johnson, who has been a strong advocate for impeachment investigations into the president and played a role in seeking to overturn the 2020 election results.
Ads Target Competitive Districts and Paint Johnson as a “Trump Loyalist”
The ads will run in eight different states, targeting some of the most competitive districts of the 2024 cycle. The seats held by Reps. Don Bacon (R-NE), Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR), Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ), Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY), John Duarte (R-CA), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Mike Garcia (R-CA), Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ), Jen Kiggans (R-VA), Young Kim (R-CA), Nick LaLota (R-NY), Mike Lawler (R-NY), Marc Molinaro (R-NY), George Santos (R-NY), David Schweikert (R-AZ), Michelle Steel (R-CA), David Valadao (R-CA), and Brandon Williams (R-NY) are being targeted. The ads portray Johnson as a “Trump loyalist” who would use his position as the No. 1 House lawmaker to push for an “evidence-free impeachment inquiry,” which the CIP argues is a blatant political move intended to “hurt President Biden.”
“After weeks of chaos, Republicans just elected MAGA Mike Johnson as the new Speaker of the House. Johnson is as extreme as they come,” the voice-over in the 30-second ad says. “This is who Rep. XXX voted for. Tell him to stop putting MAGA over the American people.”
Impeachment Investigation Continues
The ad campaign comes shortly after Johnson indicated that House Republicans’ work on the impeachment investigation is far from over. He stated that lawmakers are aggressively moving forward and that the evidence gathered so far is affirming their suspicions. However, it remains uncertain how much of this evidence will be made public, as Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer expressed reluctance to hold more hearings.
Republicans had hoped to use the impeachment inquiry as a way to expand their majority in 2024. With all 435 seats up for grabs, including 42 competitive ones, the GOP has a slight advantage as they seek to maintain their slim majority in the lower chamber. Of the 42 competitive seats, 18 are held by Republicans in districts that voted for Biden in 2020, making the next election cycle highly competitive.

Given the fierce competition for control of the House of Representatives in the next election cycle, how crucial are the efforts of House Democrats to target vulnerable Republicans who supported Johnson’s election as speaker in determining the balance of power and shaping the direction of the Republican Party
Bacon (NE-02), David Valadao (CA-21), Maria Elvira Salazar (FL-27), Young Kim (CA-39), Michelle Steel (CA-48), John Katko (NY-24), Tom Rice (SC-07), and Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) are at stake. The ads aim to paint Johnson as a “Trump loyalist” who is out of touch with the values and concerns of the constituents he represents.
The CIP, a progressive advocacy group, argues that Johnson’s election as speaker shows a dangerous shift within the Republican Party towards extremism. They claim that Johnson’s support for impeachment investigations and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results go against the principles of democracy and the will of the American people.
Johnson, who represents Louisiana’s 4th congressional district, has consistently aligned himself with former President Donald Trump and his policies. He has been an ardent supporter of Trump’s “America First” agenda and has defended Trump against accusations of wrongdoing. His election as speaker is seen by House Democrats as a sign that the Republican Party is doubling down on its embrace of Trumpism, even after his defeat in the 2020 election.
Democrats Highlight Johnson’s Controversial Positions
The CIP’s ads highlight some of Johnson’s most controversial positions, including his support for the Texas lawsuit seeking to overturn the election results in four battleground states. They argue that his actions were an attack on democracy and an attempt to disenfranchise millions of voters.
In addition, the ads emphasize Johnson’s role in advocating for impeachment investigations into President Biden. They argue that this is a clear case of hypocrisy, as Johnson was quick to condemn any investigation into Trump but now seeks to undermine the legitimacy of the current president.
Furthermore, the ads raise concerns about Johnson’s stance on key policy issues, such as healthcare and climate change. They argue that his extreme views and unwillingness to compromise will hinder progress on important legislation and harm the American people.
A Battle for the Soul of the Republican Party
The campaign against vulnerable Republicans who supported Johnson’s election as speaker is not just about the upcoming elections, but also about the future of the Republican Party. House Democrats see this as an opportunity to highlight the growing divide within the GOP between those who align themselves with Trump’s brand of politics and those who seek a more moderate and inclusive approach.
By targeting Republicans in competitive districts won by President Biden, House Democrats hope to flip these seats in the next election cycle and send a strong message to the Republican Party that extremism will not be tolerated by the American people. They aim to show that voters want representatives who will prioritize their needs and work towards bipartisan solutions, rather than advancing a divisive and dangerous agenda.
The Fight Ahead
The battle for control of the House of Representatives in the next election cycle is likely to be fiercely contested. With both parties vying for power, the efforts of House Democrats to target vulnerable Republicans who supported Johnson’s election as speaker will play a crucial role in determining the balance of power.
It remains to be seen whether this campaign will be successful in swaying voters and flipping these seats. However, what is clear is that House Democrats are determined to use Johnson’s election as a rallying cry to mobilize their base and highlight the dangers of extremism within the Republican Party.
The outcome of this battle will not only shape the composition of the House of Representatives, but also the direction of the Republican Party. Will they continue to embrace Trumpism and move further to the right, or will there be a push for a more moderate and inclusive approach? The answers to these questions will have far-reaching implications for the future of American politics.
