Democrat memo warns of ‘threat’ to Virginians under GOP control.
Democrats Warn of Extremism and Dangers in Virginia Elections
Democrats in the Virginia House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate recently issued a memo outlining the potential risks if Republicans gain control of the Senate and maintain control of the House and governor’s office.
In a joint memo released on Oct. 9, the Virginia House Democratic Caucus, Senate Democratic Caucus, and The Majority Project emphasized that the upcoming Nov. 7 elections in Virginia are not just a battle between political parties, but a “battle between extremism and commonsense.”The memo states, “The threat is real. We’ve seen the extreme policies they’ve put forward in the past and know if elected, they will do everything they can to ban abortion, weaken gun safety laws, and put middle-class families at risk.”
The Democrats firmly believe that if Republicans gain full control, they will impose a ban on abortion after 15 weeks. The memo also highlights the importance of winning the support of suburban women and young voters, as they will play a critical role in preventing what they refer to as the “MAGA takeover” in Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Northern Virginia.
According to NBC exit polls from the 2021 Virginia election, Republican gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin secured 57 percent of white women voters, compared to Democrat Terry McAuliffe’s 43 percent.Furthermore, the Democrats criticize Youngkin for accepting donations from billionaires. Youngkin’s Spirit of Virginia political action committee has been actively fundraising for Republicans in down-ballot races, according to the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP). On the other hand, Democrats have also been pouring money into the state, with significant contributions from the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee and the Democratic National Committee. The memo states, “The good news is that Democratic candidates are keeping pace in their fundraising against Republicans. According to VPAP, out of the seven most competitive House seats, four have Democratic fundraising advantages, one has a GOP advantage, and the other two are evenly matched. On the Senate side, the four toss-up seats have an equal split in terms of fundraising, with one Democratic advantage, one GOP advantage, and two evenly matched.”
The Democrats also plan to highlight the risk of a government shutdown in mid-November, accusing Republicans of being “extreme.” They emphasize that while every Virginia Democrat voted to keep the federal government open, the majority of Virginia Republicans in Congress voted to shut it down. The memo warns that if the government shuts down, it will have severe consequences for troops, federal government workers, and everyday Virginians who rely on essential benefits.
However, some “America First” Republicans who voted against the budget legislation argue that they do not want to support a package that includes sending more money to Ukraine. They have requested that aid for Ukraine be separated from the budget, and they pledge to vote in favor of keeping the government funded once this separation is made.
What specific concerns do the Democrats raise about Youngkin’s stance on gun safety laws?
Throughout the campaign, bringing in contributions from wealthy individuals such as hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin and private equity executive Robert Smith.
The memo emphasizes that these donations suggest Youngkin is beholden to the interests of the rich and powerful, rather than the needs and concerns of everyday Virginians.
By highlighting these policy differences, the Democrats hope to mobilize voters and prevent Republicans from gaining control of the Virginia state government. They urge voters to support Democratic candidates who will champion women’s reproductive rights, sensible gun legislation, and a fair economic agenda that benefits all Virginians.
The outcome of the Virginia elections will not only impact the state’s policies and governance but will also send a message about the direction of the country as a whole. The Democrats’ warning about the dangers of Republican control in Virginia reflects their concern about the potential rollback of progressive reforms and the advancement of conservative policies.
Virginia voters will have the opportunity to choose representatives who align with their values and priorities on November 7. The Democrats’ memo serves as a call to action for voters to carefully consider the implications of their choices and to vote in favor of candidates who will safeguard their interests and uphold the values they hold dear.
The Virginia House of Delegates and Virginia Senate Democrats have sounded the alarm, cautioning voters about the risks of extremism and the potential consequences if Republicans gain control of the Senate and maintain control of the House and governor’s office. Their memo underscores the stakes of the upcoming elections and urges voters to support Democratic candidates who will champion common-sense policies and protect the rights and interests of all Virginians.
