Democrat megadonor Reid Hoffman looking to edge Trump out of GOP presidential primary

Democratic mega-donor Reid Hoffman is planning to analyze state trends to determine where Democrats need to focus their efforts leading up to the 2024 presidential election. Hoffman and his top advisor, Dmitri Mehlhorn, are working to influence the GOP primary by studying early voting states and analyzing party registration requirements, demographic groups, state GOP nominating rules, and media presence. Through these efforts, they hope to edge former President Donald Trump out of the GOP primary race.

Hoffman plans to spend as much as possible to ensure Trump is beaten in the primary race, and has previously campaigned for President Joe Biden, donating over $2 million to super PACs backing Biden’s candidacy in 2020. Hoffman has donated over $4 million to his preferred congressional candidates during the 2022 midterm elections, as his philosophy centers on electing centrist Democrats, in order to win general elections and ultimately defeat Republicans. Mehlhorn, Hoffman’s top advisor, has expressed his belief that far-left groups such as the Justice Democrats PAC help the MAGA movement by attacking centrist Democrats who can win general elections. Although these efforts could make Biden’s reelection slightly more contentious, a Quinnipiac University poll released on March 15 shows that Biden would beat both Trump and Republican Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis.

Despite not announcing his candidacy, DeSantis is considered a potential presidential candidate and some, including Rep. Chip Roy, have endorsed the Florida Governor. Hoffman is not planning to back DeSantis over Trump or view him as an existential threat, but rather focuses his efforts on finding viable candidates to defeat Republicans in the general elections, which is crucial in ensuring a Democratic victory in 2024.
