Democrat AGs react to Target boycott of ‘Pride Month’ products.
Democrat Prosecutors Stand Up for “Pride Month” Merchandise
A group of 15 Democrat attorneys general recently took action after Target Corp. removed some of its “Pride Month” merchandise, sparking boycotts. In a letter addressed to Target CEO Brian Cornell, the coalition expressed concern over the decision to pull LGBT products, including clothing for small children, stating that it represents a setback for the “march for social progress.”
“While we understand the basis for this action, we are also concerned it sends a message that those who engage in hateful and disruptive conduct can cause even large corporations to succumb to their bullying, and that they have the power to determine when LGBTQIA+ consumers will feel comfortable in Target stores—or anywhere in society,”
It’s important to note that the attorneys general did not specify the bullying or disruptive conduct they were referring to. However, there were reports of bomb threats received by Target locations in at least five states, with some accusing the company of betraying the LGBTQ+ community.
Backlash and Boycotts
Target’s decision to offer a “pride collection” of merchandise has faced significant backlash, leading to a drop in the company’s shares. Conservative commentators called for a boycott after it was discovered that Target was selling a swimsuit apparently targeting transgender women. This controversy, along with other items flagged by social media influencers, including onesies and children’s books with LGBT themes, contributed to the negative sentiment.
Stock Price Decline
Target’s stock price has taken a hit since the boycott began. On May 17, the stock stood at $160.96, but as of Tuesday afternoon, it had dropped to $132.73.
Financial Downgrades
Target faced further challenges as JPMorgan Chase downgraded its stock due to predicted sales decline caused by inflation. Additionally, KeyBanc Capital Markets reduced the retailer’s shares, citing the resumption of student loan payments.
Conservative Commentary
Conservative commentator Candace Owens urged people to boycott Target, claiming that the company has been excessively supportive of transgenderism.
Amidst the controversy, Target confirmed the removal of some products and the relocation of “pride month” displays, citing threats that impacted the safety and well-being of their team members.
“Since introducing this year’s collection, we’ve experienced threats impacting our team members’ sense of safety and well-being while at work,” Target stated.
