Democrat suggests governor’s choice for Senate seat before election is racially biased.

A Bold Stand Against Tokenism

A powerful voice has emerged from the Democratic party in California. Rep. Barbara Lee,⁢ an influential black ⁣congresswoman, is challenging the notion that appointing a black woman to a Senate vacancy is merely a token gesture.

Recently, Lee expressed her disappointment with California‍ Governor‌ Gavin Newsom for excluding her from consideration to replace the ailing Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Newsom, who had pledged‍ to appoint a black woman to the position, cited Lee’s ongoing campaign for the ⁣seat as the reason for ruling ⁣her out.

“The idea that a Black woman should be appointed only as a caretaker to simply check a box is insulting to countless Black women⁤ across this country who‌ have carried the Democratic Party⁢ to victory election after election,” Lee passionately stated.⁢ “If the Governor intends to keep his promise and appoint a Black ⁣woman to the Senate, the ‌people of California deserve the best possible person‌ for that job. Not⁣ a token appointment.”

Lee has long been a vocal advocate for affirmative action and has shown her support ‍for the appointment of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the‌ Supreme Court. President Joe Biden fulfilled his promise to nominate a ‌black woman⁤ by selecting Jackson.

Despite her⁢ strong stance, Lee faces an uphill battle in the Senate ⁤primary. According to a recent‍ Berkeley poll, ⁤she trails behind ⁢fellow Democratic representatives Adam Schiff and Katie Porter by double digits. However,⁤ if Newsom were ⁢to appoint Lee to fill Feinstein’s seat, she‌ could potentially benefit ⁤from the advantage of incumbency.
