“NY Democrat Jamaal Bowman literally pulled a fire alarm to stall and prevent our efforts to force a vote to keep the federal government open. Pathetic. Criminal investigation needs to happen,” Republican Rep. Nick Langworthy of New York said, according to the New York Post.
Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis of New York slammed Bowman for the incident.
This is the United States Congress, not a New York City high school. To pull the fire alarm to disrupt proceedings when we are trying to draft legislation to AVERT A SHUTDOWN is pathetic…even for members of the socialist squad. https://t.co/hcqD7hOcDr

The alarm was pulled shortly after House Republicans said they would push a stopgap funding bill to a floor vote in hopes of averting a government shutdown.
According to The New York Times, the bill passed 335-91, attracting 209 Democrats and 126 Republicans in support. The bill did not include funding for Ukraine, which had been in various Senate versions of continuing resolutions needed to keep government office open Monday.
As of Saturday afternoon, it was unclear if the Senate would approve the House bill. The federal government was due to run out of the authority to spend money at midnight Saturday as the fiscal year comes to a close.

The incident occurred on Saturday, September 30, 2023, when Congress was already in a state of chaos due to intense political discussions and negotiations. Congressman Jamaal Bowman, a progressive Democrat from New York, was caught on camera pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon Office Building, further escalating the tense environment.
Soon after the images went viral on social media, Bowman’s office issued a statement apologizing for any inconvenience caused by the incident. According to his representative, the congressman had not anticipated triggering a building alarm as he was rushing to attend an urgent vote. They expressed regret for any confusion that may have ensued due to his actions.
Following the incident, House Administration Committee Chair Republican Representative Bryan Steil of Wisconsin stated that an investigation into the matter is currently underway. This investigation aims to uncover the motive behind Bowman’s decision to pull the fire alarm, causing an interruption to the official proceedings of the House. Steil confirmed that pulling the fire alarm in the Cannon Office Building on that morning has raised concerns and necessitates an examination.
The incident drew significant attention and reaction from both sides of the political spectrum. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican, called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to prosecute Bowman under the same law used to prosecute individuals involved in the January 6th Capitol riot. Her tweet suggested that Bowman’s actions should be treated as a criminal offense. Additionally, Republican Representative Nick Langworthy from New York criticized Bowman for using a fire alarm to stall and prevent efforts to keep the federal government functioning.
While the motive behind Bowman’s action remains unknown, some reports indicate that Capitol police officers were alerted to locate him following the incident. The seriousness of this matter is emphasized by the fact that it caused a halt in the official proceedings of the House.
In conclusion, progressive Congressman Jamaal Bowman caused chaos in Congress by pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon Office Building. As investigations continue, it remains to be seen what consequences or disciplinary actions might be taken regarding this disruptive incident.
