For most of the campaign, Haaland was seen as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination. The former Cabinet head outraised Bregman and was backed by Sen. Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) and ex-Sen. Tom Udall. Haaland’s former colleague in the Biden cabinet, ex-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, also backed her run early.

Haaland served as interior secretary during Biden’s entire term in office. Before joining the Biden Cabinet, Haaland was a member of the House of Representatives from New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District.
