DC Metro train derails by Reagan National Airport.
Train Derailment Temporarily Suspends Metrorail Service on Blue and Yellow Lines
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has announced the temporary suspension of Metrorail service on the blue and yellow lines due to a train derailment. The incident occurred between the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Potomac Yard stations in Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia.
WMATA took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to inform the public that no injuries were reported and shuttle buses would be provided as an alternative mode of transportation between the affected stations.
Smooth Transfer for Affected Passengers
Approximately 50 customers who were on the derailed train were promptly transferred by shuttle bus to another train, ensuring their journey could continue without further delay.
The Potomac Yard station, which opened in May 2023, is the newest addition to the Metrorail system. In contrast, the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport station has been serving passengers since 1977.
This incident brings back memories of a previous derailment on the blue line in Arlington, Virginia, between the Rosslyn and Arlington National Cemetery stations. The transit agency had to temporarily withdraw its 7000 series trains due to wheel malfunctions discovered at that time.
