Daunte Wright shooter released from Minnesota prison after 16 months
The release of former Minnesota police officer Kim Potter has sparked outrage and heartbreak among the family of Daunte Wright, the 20-year-old man she fatally shot during a traffic stop in 2021. Potter served just 16 months of her two-year sentence and was released from prison on Monday.
Potter’s decision to pull out her handgun instead of her Taser was deemed a “mistake that ended tragically” by Judge Regina Chu, who opted for a lighter sentence. The decision has left Wright’s family struggling to find peace, with his mother Katie expressing her anger and dread at Potter’s release.
Despite the disappointment, the Wright family received a $3.25 million settlement in June 2022 from the city of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, in connection to the shooting. The settlement also included policy changes regarding traffic stop training for officers.
While Potter may no longer serve as a police officer, the fact that she will be able to watch her children grow up and touch them has left the Wright family feeling a sense of injustice. “She has two. I can’t hold my son,” Katie Wright said.
