Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has made a surprising move in the case against former President Donald Trump and his 18 co-defendants. Willis has requested an October 23 start date for the trial, shaking things up after co-defendant Kenneth Chesebro’s request for a speedy trial.
In response to Chesebro’s request, Willis filed a motion on Thursday, pushing for the trial to begin on October 23. This new date falls outside of the usual July-August 2023 term and would be part of the “next succeeding regular court term,” as stated in Willis’ motion.
The charges against Trump, which were brought forth by a grand jury on August 14, include 13 counts of violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. These charges stem from alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.
Trump’s co-defendants in this case include notable figures such as Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, and Mark Meadows, among others.
Interestingly, the former president was scheduled to appear for booking at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday.
Earlier this week, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee revealed that Trump’s bond would be set at $200,000.
Prior to his surrender, Trump made a change in his legal representation, replacing his lead attorney with Steve Sadow, an Atlanta defense attorney who has previously represented high-profile clients like Usher and Rick Ross.
