“DA Bragg Wants a Spectacle, We Don’t” – Trump Legal Team Calls for No Cameras in Courtroom During Arraignment
On Monday, Joe Tacopina, a lawyer representing former President Donald Trump, confirmed to the New York Post that he asked Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan to ban cameras in the courtroom during Trump’s appearance on Tuesday to plead in an indictment from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.
Tacopina stated that they do not normally allow cameras in courtrooms, and they do not want an exception now. They believe that allowing cameras would create a spectacle and that both sides do not want that.
Trump’s team argues that the request for cameras in the courtroom should be denied because it will create a circus-like atmosphere at the arraignment and raise unique security concerns. They believe that it is inconsistent with President Trump’s presumption of innocence, according to CNN, who obtained a letter addressed to Judge Juan Merchan.
Many media organizations requested that the judge allow cameras when news broke that Trump was going to be indicted. The judge gave both the DA’s office and Trump’s team until 1 pm Monday to raise any objections to the request for cameras in the courtroom.
The New York Post reports that Trump himself made the decision to have his team ask for the cameras to be removed. It was rumored on Monday that a gag order would be imposed on the case. The charges against Trump have not been revealed by the DA’s office.
