Cuomo Slams De Blasio’s Reopening Plans: ‘There Is No Person Who Will Safely Reopen Faster Than Myself’

Shortly after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) on Thursday announced that the Big Apple’s economy will be reopened on July 1, Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) mocked the timeline.

During a press conference, Cuomo was asked about de Blasio’s reopening timeline, with which the governor disagreed.

“I want it opened up on Monday. I want to open up New York City on Tuesday. I want it open on Wednesday. I want Buffalo opened up on Thursday,” Cuomo said, according to the New York Post.

“There is no person who will safely reopen faster than myself,” Cuomo said. “I’m not going to predict the future. But if you said to me, ‘July 1,’ I’d say, ‘I hope to get there before July 1.’”

Although Cuomo wouldn’t give a definitive reopening date for New York City, he said it should be sooner than July 1.

“I don’t want to wait that long … I think we can do it before that,” the governor said.

When asked for comment, de Blasio Press Secretary Bill Neidhardt hit back. “I don’t care what a serial sexual harasser and assaulter and someone who covered up the deaths of thousands of people at nursing homes has to say about anything,” Neidhardt told NY1 reporter Courtney Gross.

De Blasio made the announcement to reopen on MSNBC earlier in the day, citing the large number of residents who have received the COVID vaccine.

“Our plan is to fully reopen New York City on July 1st,” the mayor explained. “We are ready for stores to open, for businesses to open, offices, theaters, full-strength.”

“What we’re seeing is people have gotten vaccinated in extraordinary numbers, 6.3 million vaccinations in New York City to date,” de Blasio said.

According to the mayor, the city’s focus is on getting the “grassroots” vaccinated. Part of that is through events, like the one taking place at the American Museum of Natural History. New Yorkers can get their vaccine near the whale exhibit. In exchange, he or she will receive four free admissions to the museum.

According to a handout from the mayor’s office, “100% reopening means fully reopening: restaurants and bars; stores, shops, and small businesses; hair salons and barber shops; gyms and fitness classes; arenas and stadiums; theaters, music halls, and museums.”

Governor Cuomo has repeatedly come under fire for his nursing home scandal. Early on in the pandemic — under Cuomo’s directive — nursing homes and long-term care facilities were forced to accept COVID-positive patients into their facilities. The policy is possibly responsible for tens of thousands of deaths. To make matters worse, Cuomo reportedly “spent months” trying to downplay the death toll associated with the policy.

Given Cuomo’s nursing home scandal and his reported attempts to cover up what took place, it’s hard for anyone to trust he would safely reopen the largest nation in the country. “Safety” is a word that needs to be dropped from his vocabulary, at least when it comes to COVID.
