Here are some ways you can save on cruise vacations

1. Flexibility is key when it comes to where and when you travel

Flexibility in terms of location and year can result in lower prices than higher-demand cruises. You might be able to wait until fall or winter to book a trip.

2. Compare the different cruises

Saving money is as simple as comparing different offers from various cruise lines. Some less popular cruise lines may offer deals that major ones don’t — those deals can include free Wi-Fi and deals on drinks.

“While base-bottom fares can be quite attractive, it might not always bring the highest value,” Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of the website for cruise reviews, said: Cruise Critic.

“Instead, it’s important to factor in added costs that might be associated with your cruise. Things like specialty dining, shore excursions, and even beverages that come with an added cost.”

3. Book a cruise that includes complimentary extras

You should also consider cruises with added perks such as Princess Cruises or MSC Cruises. These cruise lines offer both regular fares as well as special packages.

4. Check for deals for children

Many cruise lines offer discounts for families who travel together. Norwegian Cruise Line has an example of a promotion where third and fourth guests (including children) can cruise free on select itineraries.

Holland America is another line that allows children aged 18 and under to cruise free on selected cruises until 2024. MSC Cruises is a budget-friendly option that families can take on select itineraries.

5. Cruise loyalty programs are available.

A loyalty program with cruise lines can help save cruise passengers a lot of money, especially if they cruise often. MSC Cruises Voyagers Club members get 5% off all cruises they book, except MSC Grant Tours or Tandem. Additionally, members can receive a 5% discount on eligible voyages booked at the least six to nine months ahead of time.

6. Use your credit card to pay for cruise trips

Sign-up bonuses are offered by some credit cards when someone opens an account and spends money within the first few month. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card offers 60,000 bonus points for new customers who spend $4,000 within three months of opening their account.

7. Travel rewards can be used to book pre- or post-cruise hotel rooms

Like the previous tip you can use your rewards to save money on your next trip. You can book flights from the nearest airport to your cruise port using your Delta Air Lines SkyMiles. You can also book a hotel using your World of Hyatt points without additional charges.

8. Book your cruise with a travel agent

Travel agencies work closely with cruise lines, which allows them to sell cruises at a lower price than advertised. Agents may also be able to offer extra benefits, such as free onboard credits, ship gratuities, or room upgrades, when you book a cruise.

9. You shouldn’t overspend on the cabin where you are staying

Interior cabins that do not overlook the ocean can be half the cost of balconies on the outside of a ship.

It is important to know that many cruise lines offer passengers the opportunity to upgrade their cruises. This could sometimes result in a better room for a fraction of the price that was initially offered online.

10. Keep your sails on an “older” Ship

The ships that are only a few years old are often less expensive than newer cruise ships, and still offer many of the same amenities like waterparks and arcades.

11. Book your cruise in advance

It is a good idea to book your cruise early so you can save money over the long-term. Most cruises allow passengers to pay three years in advance.

12. Drive to your cruise terminal

Gray Faust states that driving to the cruise departure points can be a cost-saving option.

“With many cruise fares starting at under $60 per night, the value of a drive-to cruise cannot be understated,” Gray Faust. “The fare includes accommodations, meals, and entertainment onboard, plus transportation to each port city along the itinerary. You simply couldn’t match that value by traveling to the same region on a land-based vacation.”
