Crenshaw ‘Hopeful’ Vision In Eye Will Return, Cautions He’s Not ‘Out Of The Woods Yet’
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) offered a cautiously optimistic health update following his emergency eye surgery two weeks ago, announcing late Friday that the retina in what he’s called his “half” good eye — the eye he uses to see — remains attached as of his first follow-up appointment.
“Last week, I had my first follow-up visit with my surgeon, which went very well. To our relief, my retina was still in place during my follow-up appointment. I can lift my head up again, and no longer have to position myself face-down, which is a relief,” he said. “This is obviously good news, but it doesn’t mean we are out of the woods yet.”
“I still cannot see much other than lights and shadows, basically, as I am still in the early stages of my recovery. I am not sure how my vision will be in a few weeks, but I am hopeful and confident that it will return to normal,” added Crenshaw.
Crenshaw, who was told in mid-April that his retina was detaching, said Friday evening that his doctors, during his emergency surgery earlier this month, placed a “silicon buckle” on his retina and “used a laser to ‘glue’ around the edges” of it.
“When they did that, they needed to keep my retina in place, which is why they injected a gas bubble into my eye to act as a bandage for my retina and prevent further detaching. That is why I cannot see anything right now and won’t be able to see for the next few weeks until the gas bubble dissipates,” the congressman explained.
“Tara and I are doing well, thanks to the generous prayers and support for which we are so very grateful. We’ve been through harder times before and we are going to get through this. Thank you and God bless,” he concluded.

The Texas Republican congressman said two weeks ago he started seeing “dark, blurry spots,” and when he visited an ophthalmologist only days later, he was told his retina was detaching. “This is a terrifying prognosis for someone with one eye, and the nature of the injuries that I sustained in Afghanistan,” said Crenshaw.
“Anyone who knows the history of my injuries knows that I don’t have a ‘good eye,’ but half a good eye. The blast from 2012 caused a cataract, excessive tissue damage, and extensive damage to my retina. It was always a possibility that the effects of the damage to my retina would resurface, and it appears that is exactly what has happened,” he said.
