Coons cautions Netanyahu about the potential legacy of strained US-Israel relations
Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, issued a warning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the potential impact of his upcoming military strategy on the relationship between Israel and the United States. Coons, who serves as President Biden’s campaign co-chairman, shared his concerns on ABC’s This Week show regarding the potential consequences of an Israeli attack on Rafah, Gaza, a region heavily populated with Palestinian refugees. The Senator suggested that such an event could lead to President Biden taking drastic measures such as withholding weapons from Israel.
Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his next war strategy could affect his country’s relationship with the United States.
As President Joe Biden’s campaign co-chairman, Coons appeared on This Week on Sunday to predict the repercussions of Israel attacking Rafah, Gaza, which is filled with Palestinian refugees. According to Coons, an invasion of Rafah could result in Biden holding all weapons from Israel or worse.
“It is tragic that we’re at this point, and Martha, I want to conclude by saying that I hope Prime Minister Netanyahu is thinking about his legacy,” Coons said. “Right now, his legacy is the huge, strategic, and defensive failure of October 7th, and his legacy could be a real gap, a break in the long, strong, bipartisan strategic relationship between the United States and Israel. I think that would be tragic. His legacy could instead be achieving regional security and peace for Israel.”

Netanyahu served as prime minister from 1996-1999; he was reelected in 2009, until he was ousted in 2021 and then won another reelection in 2022.

While Palestinian refugees have sought shelter in Rafah, the area is considered a Hamas stronghold as its operatives are known to embed themselves among civilians and use them as human shields. Additionally, Hamas is holding 132 hostages, according to the Israel Defense Forces, including two children. At least 30 hostages are believed to have died in captivity.
Hamas invaded southern Israel over 215 days ago. World leaders have since called on the terrorist group to release the hostages in its custody. Hamas exchanged some of the hostages last year for Palestinians who were inside Israeli prisons.
