Escaped prisoner found dead in river after 5 days.

Convicted Murderer’s Body Found in River 5 Days After He Escaped Prison

A manhunt for Bradley Gillespie, a convicted murderer who escaped from an Ohio prison with another inmate by hiding in a trash container, has come to a tragic end. Gillespie’s body was found floating in the Ohio River, police in Kentucky said.

“A preliminary investigation indicates we recovered the body of Bradley Gillespie from the river,” Henderson Police Chief Sean McKinney said.

Gillespie was a passenger in a stolen car when he fled on foot, prompting a multiday manhunt. His body was spotted near where the other inmate, James Lee, was captured after a pursuit and traffic stop.

Lee was serving a sentence imposed in 2021 for burglary and safecracking. Gillespie was imprisoned since 2016 and was convicted of a double homicide.

An autopsy is planned for Gillespie on Tuesday. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is conducting a criminal investigation, and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction has placed several people on paid administrative leave as an internal investigation continues.

Escape from Allen/Oakwood Correctional Institution

The inmates escaped from the Allen/Oakwood Correctional Institution in Lima, Ohio, last Monday by concealing themselves in a dumpster. Lee was discovered missing during a prisoner count, which revealed Gillespie was also missing.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction had said investigators determined the inmates left the correctional facility “after concealing themselves in a dumpster.”

The two men were last seen on surveillance video inside the facility just after 8:40 a.m. Monday.
