‘Contrary To Florida Law’: DeSantis Rejects High School Course Emerging Nationwide Over Wokeness Concerns

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis A College Board proposal to approve a new African American Studies curriculum was rejected, reportedly because it violated a ban that indoctrinated students into wakingness.

The Stop Woke Act, signed last year, prevents Florida schools from teaching students to believe in discriminating on the basis of race, color, or sex — ideas that can often be found in woke programs. DeSantis’ move comes after a federal judge ruled in favor of his administration’s attempt to fully implement other parts of the law.

“[A]s presented, the content of this course is inexplicably contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value,” In a January 12th letter, the Florida Department of Education informed the College Board. This was the first time that the College Board had been contacted by The National Review. The letter states that the department will reconsider the matter in the future if the College Board decides to make it. “lawful” “historically accurate.”

The College Board is the leading national organization that gives high school students college credit for advanced courses. It has been testing the African American Studies curriculum in preparation for its wide-scale launch in 2024. It currently offers curricula for numerous other courses across the 50 states, including languages, arts, sciences and languages.

However, the company has not yet ventured into this market. “studies” fields — which include African American studies but also gender studies, women’s studies, and ethnic studies — often seen as the most woke departments in higher education.

While some argue that teaching African American Studies encourages holistic thinking about U.S. History, detractors point out that the curricula primarily focus on narratives of Left-wing grievance and advocacy, not history.

For example, the College Board’s own website suggests that a major in African American studies can prepare you for only one Career field: Community organizer and activist. According to the College Board, a history major can help you get a job in this field. multitude of careersThis includes as an anthropologist and conservator, curator or foreign service officer, historian, judge, attorney, or other related roles.

The College Board refused to release its African American Studies curriculum publicly, arguing it contained proprietary information. The curriculum is heavily influenced by Marxism and socialism. It also shows sympathy for CRT tenants such as rejection of colorblindness.

The College Board stated to The Daily Wire, that the curriculum would continue to be reviewed before being released.

“Like all new AP courses, AP African American Studies is undergoing a rigorous, multi-year pilot phase, collecting feedback from teachers, students, scholars and policymakers,” The College Board stated. “The process of piloting and revising course frameworks is a standard part of any new AP course, and frameworks change significantly as a result. We look forward to publicly releasing the updated course framework as soon as it is completed and well before this class is widely available in American high schools.”

Cassie Palelis (Florida Department of Education Press Secretary) told The Daily Wire that if the course meets the standards established by the governor, the state will be open to consideration.

“In its current form, the College Board’s AP African American Studies course lacks educational value and is contrary to Florida law,” Palelis said. “If the course comes into compliance and incorporates historically accurate content, the Department will reopen the discussion.”

Joshua Myers, who is said to have helped create the course, opposes neutrality and supports capitalism, NRO reports. His website biography states that his research interests include “critical university studies” “disciplinarity,” Also available: “Africana intellectual histories and traditions, Africana philosophy, musics, and foodways.”
