Conservative Women: Prettier and Happier, According to AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) has revealed an interesting perception: conservative women are considered both prettier and happier than their left-wing counterparts.

In a study published in the journal Scientific Reports, an AI model assigned high “attractiveness” scores to conservative women. The researchers noted that previous studies conducted with human raters have also shown a connection between attractiveness and conservatism.

The study further revealed that expressing happiness is associated with conservatism for both genders. The researchers suggested that this correlation could be due to right-wing politicians being more extraverted or attractiveness being more valued by conservatives. However, they emphasized the need for further research to explore this relationship.

The researchers also used AI to create “facial composites” by combining photos of both men and women. The results showed that right-wing composites appeared happier than their left-wing counterparts, particularly among females. These composites were also perceived as more attractive.

The study, conducted by psychologists and political scientists from Denmark and Sweden, utilized “deep learning” AI to predict a person’s ideology based on their facial photo. The researchers confirmed that facial photographs can indeed predict political leanings and aimed to explore the reasons behind these predictions.

The study analyzed headshots of 3,233 Danish political candidates from the 2017 Danish Municipal election. The AI used to analyze the faces was Microsoft Azure’s Cognitive Services’ Face API. Impressively, the AI accurately predicted the political leanings of both men and women 61% of the time, based solely on a single photo. This raises concerns about privacy and the potential for AI to easily identify personal information.

Interestingly, a previous study from 2017 supports the findings of this research. It revealed that right-leaning politicians are generally considered more attractive in Europe, the United States, and Australia. The researchers of that study suggested that good-looking individuals are more likely to oppose progressive tax policies and welfare programs.

Furthermore, a 2022 survey found that conservative women are significantly more likely to be “completely satisfied” with their lives compared to liberal women. The survey also highlighted that conservative women are 24% more likely to be happy with their family life.
