Congress Continues to Get up to Speed on Artificial Intelligence

Even though Congressmen may not have learned about artificial intelligence ( AI ) in time, they are determined to catch up.

Politicians are researching and considering AI’s’s advantages and disadvantages, as well as its present and future effects. They are investigating Uncle Sam’s’s potential contributions to the creation and application of technology and phenomena.

Rep. Don Beyer, 72, of Virginia, has returned to George Mason University as a part-time school to further his knowledge of artificial intelligence and stay current with technological advancements.

Beyer told WTOP News,” I’m’m pursuing a graduate degree in computer science with an emphasis on machine learning, and according to George Mason University, that’s’s the closest to quote unquote artificial intelligence.”

Beyer is a part of the roughly 40-person Congressional AI Caucus, but he thinks that number may increase to 100 this summer.

The political and legislative engagement in Washington, D.C., is being slowly and carefully observed by AI developers and business users.

Companies are also using Capitol Hill’s’s lobbying and advocacy power to prevent excessive government regulation and intrusion while also acknowledging that Congress will have a say in how AI is implemented and that its moderate and low participation may actually be advantageous for the public and high tech sector.

In truth, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has previously and vehemently advocated for less rules and less government involvement on behalf of business, is urging Congress to play a vital role in the implementation and execution of AI.

The Chamber’s’s Commission on Artificial Intelligence Competitiveness, Inclusion, and Innovation stated that” Policies to promote reliable AI may be a top priority for this and future services and Congress” among the top priorities.

Congress begins to exercise influence

Rep. Jay Obernolte( R-California ) is a member of Congress’ lower chamber who is well-versed in AI and has been keeping up with its spread. Obernolte, the creator of the popular and award-winning videogame company, holds a doctorate in public administration from California Baptist University, as well as degrees in engineering and applied science from the California Institute of Technology( Caltech ) and master’s’s in artificial intelligence from UCLA.

The Fellowships and Traineeships for Early-Career AI Researchers Act, which directed the” National Science Foundation( NSF ) to award grants and fellowships to support students and researchers in fields related to artificial intelligence ,” was introduced by Obernolte nearly two years ago, in June 2021, when the GOP was the minority party in the House.

The House Science, Space, and Technology Committee passed the bill on June 16, 2021, according to a press release from Obernolte.” Personal technology may be crucial to the future of jobs in our nation as well as an important aspect of our national security, particularly given the wave of cyberattacks by strange actors.”
