Lawmakers Demand Answers After Transgender Hormone Study Linked to Suicides

Two young people have died by suicide during a transgender hormone study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and 11 participants reported suicidal thoughts during the study. Lawmakers are now demanding answers and questioning why the study wasn’t halted after participants died or reported adverse effects. The study, which aimed to analyze the psychosocial state of transgender and nonbinary youth between the ages of 12 and 20, has been criticized for subjecting children to “radical gender ideology.” Of the 315 study subjects, 240 were minors. The study received a five-year grant of $477,444 from NIH and was led by Dr. Diane Chen at the Lurie Children’s Hospital. Lawmakers have blasted the study for its lack of a control group and for not addressing the risks of cardiovascular disease and blood clotting. They also criticized the study for not dwelling on the suicides and instead reporting “positive” effects of cross-sex hormones.
