CO company’s ‘smart gun’ almost sold out in preorders.

Colorado Gun Manufacturer Sells Out Second Launch of “Smart Gun”

A Colorado-based gun manufacturer, Biofire, has announced that it has almost sold out the second launch of its innovative “smart gun.” The gun comes equipped with a “Guardian Biometric Engine” that unlocks upon fingerprint identification and 3D facial recognition. The gun was launched on April 13th and less than a month later, only 2% of preorders were left. The latest edition of the gun will officially be on the market in 2024, and the “Founders Edition” has already sold out and will ship later this year.

Revolutionary Technology

The smart gun allows owners to add authorized users via its Smart Dock, but it was designed to lock “the moment it leaves your hand” to prevent misuse. The technology can recognize its user even if they are wearing a mask or gloves, or have dirty fingers. The gun is currently only available as a 9mm Luger with 10 or 15 round double-stack magazines. Its material is mostly made of stainless steel, which puts the gun’s weight at just under two and a half pounds.

Background and Inspiration

Biofire Technologies founder and CEO Kai Kloepfer began experimenting with the technology 11 years ago in response to the Aurora Theater shooting, where three people were wounded and 12 were killed. The gun is a significant step forward in gun safety technology and has the potential to save countless lives.

Colorado’s Gun Culture

Colorado is a state with over 149,000 gun licenses in 2021 alone, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Pistols were the number one type of firearm sold out of Colorado, with 9mm caliber guns being the most popular. From 2017-2021, over 26,000 gun crimes were tied to sales from the state, making it the number one seller of guns recovered by law enforcement.
