College Football: Georgia New Number One, Iowa And Cincinnati Round Out Top Three In AP Top-25

Well, that was a wild weekend of college football.

From the morning games to deep into the night, the college football slate was mesmerizing. The Red Rivalry was as up and down as it’s ever been, Kinnick Stadium in Iowa was rocking, and Alabama went down.

The AP’s top-25 rankings came out on Sunday, and there has been some major movement.

We have a new No. 1 team in the country as Georgia has taken over the top spot after beating Auburn 34-10 on The Plains and after No. 1 Alabama ended their 100-game winning streak against unranked opponents.

Georgia needs to get to their bye week with the injury to starting quarterback JT Daniels, but will need to get past a very good Kentucky (11) team in week seven first.

Speaking of Alabama, their last-second loss to Texas A&M may have been a shock, but it sure hasn’t dropped them far in the polls, as they land at No. 5 in the AP rankings. It’s the first time that Alabama is outside of the top-three since 2019.

Alabama is still very much in the College Football Playoff conversation, with a potential date with Georgia in the SEC Championship being their in if they can run the table the rest of the way.

“Hopefully we’ll learn a lot from this,” Nick Saban said after the loss. “We still can accomplish everything we want to accomplish, but we have to do things better than we did tonight. We have to play better, we have to be more consistent, we have to finish drives, we have to get more turnovers on defense, we have to get more stops on defense. There are a lot of things we need to fix.”

The Iowa Hawkeyes are the new No. 2 team in the country — their highest AP ranking since 1985 — after beating Penn State 23-20 at a raucous Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.

“It’s a pretty special place when the lights go on and the sun goes down,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said after the fans rushed the field.

Iowa is one of five Big Ten teams in the top-10, with Ohio State (6), Penn State (7), Michigan (8), and Michigan State (10) all making the list.

Cincinnati has moved up to the third spot in the poll after the losses ahead of them and drubbing Temple 52-3. It’s the Bearcats highest ranking in the history of the program.

Oklahoma lands at No. 4 after their incredible comeback in the Red River Rivalry. The Sooners completed the largest comeback in the history of the series with a 55-48 instant classic. Starting quarterback Spencer Rattler was benched in the second quarter in favor of true freshman Caleb Williams, leading to an interesting quarterback conversation as the Sooners prepare for TCU.

Oregon is the lone Pac-12 school in the top-10, coming in ninth in the poll.
