CNN’s Don Lemon Caught in Hot-Mic Moment Appearing to Slight Jon Stewart
CNN anchor Don Lemon appeared to criticize comedian Jon Stewart during a hot-mic moment after watching Stewart’s tense interview with US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks concerning the military’s neglect of veterans despite having an $850 billion budget.
After the clip aired on “CNN This Morning,” Lemon was allegedly caught slinging an insult at Stewart, stating the comedian gets more “leeway” with his comments because of his profession. The comment came as a surprise, given Stewart’s reputation as a vocal advocate for vets’ rights.
Lemon attempted to backtrack when he realized he was caught on a live mic, stating that he and his colleagues were discussing how Stewart was more than just a comedian and a “thought leader.” He also attempted to clean up the situation by complimenting Stewart’s interview skills.
Co-anchor Poppy Harlow also defended Stewart, highlighting his history of advocating for veteran’s rights and the significance of his platform.
Recently, Lemon has been involved in various controversies involving his conduct towards female colleagues, leading to a highly criticized Variety exposé. Lemon is said to be considering legal action against the publication over the report. Earlier this year, he had to apologize for comments he made about Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, which were deemed insensitive; he was subsequently required to undergo sensitivity training before being allowed back on-air.
