CNN National Security Analyst Juliette Kayyem has stirred the pot, suggesting that the Biden administration’s legal actions through the Department of Justice (DOJ) are inadequate in their efforts to prevent former President Donald Trump from a comeback. She has controversially called for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to take a more active role in the upcoming elections.
Amidst brewing tensions, Trump issued a stark warning last Saturday regarding the potential economic fallout in the auto industry if President Biden were to secure a second term.
At an Ohio rally, Trump lashed out with claims of overseas exploitation, stating, “China is now constructing massive plants in Mexico intending to sell cars into the U.S. market tariff-free.”
Trump’s Economic Warning
“To counteract this, we will impose a 100% tariff on every car that crosses the border if I’m elected,” Trump pronounced. “Without my election, however, expect an economic ‘bloodbath.’“
Democrats and media figures, however, have been accused of twisting his narrative, using selective soundbites to craft a message that Trump was forecasting a literal ‘bloodbath’ if he doesn’t win.
Kayyem, who is a former Obama-era DHS official and advisor to a surveillance company, expressed a dim view of the DOJ’s capabilities to swing the election away from Trump, thereby endorsing a more direct DHS involvement.
A proposal; It’s good that Biden is discussing the threats to our democracy from violence Trump forecasts. We have a department designed to combat terrorism. Isn’t it time we heard their plan for homeland security? DOJ isn’t equipped for this. 1/ https://t.co/n9u0gMv9iH

The Call for DHS Involvement
“We should be hearing a plan that encompasses protecting our homeland security,” wrote Kayyem, a first-generation Arab-American daughter of Lebanese immigrants. “The DOJ, simply put, is not engineered for that mission.”
She proposed a “transparent planning process” that involves local and state governments in election management, seeking to bolster transparency and crisis response.
“This plan should include a comprehensive overview of threats, a crisis response capability, guidelines for deploying public safety resources, and a team ready to address violence in real-time while keeping the public and media informed,” she elaborated.
Despite Kayyem’s insistence that states and local governments cannot be solely relied upon, she demands immediate DHS planning, which would add to existing layers of electoral involvement by federal agencies.
While the DHS is already active in the election arena, accusations fly that the media is perpetuating the ‘bloodbath’ rhetoric as a means to interfere in the electoral process.
Outlets like MSNBC, NPR, and The New York Times have been criticized for propagating what some call a deliberate distortion of Trump’s message, characterizing it as a call for violence—a classic case of disinformation.
This manipulation of Trump’s narrative is what Benjamin Franklin warned against—an unchecked court of public opinion where one can be accused and sentenced without due process, highlighting the critical need for journalistic integrity and the preservation of democratic norms.
