Climate extremists disrupt air travel, leading to flight cancellations at 2 airports.
Climate Activists Block Runways at 2 German Airports, Causing Dozens of Flight Cancellations
Climate activists took a bold stand against the most polluting form of transportation on Thursday, as they blocked flights at two German airports for several hours. Their aim was to demand tougher government action in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The group Last Generation made a powerful statement by entering the grounds of Hamburg Airport at 6 a.m. and gluing themselves to the runway. This act of civil disobedience occurred on the first day of school vacation in the north German city, causing numerous flight cancellations and forcing 10 arrivals to be diverted to other airports.
Not stopping there, members of the group also cut through a security fence at Duesseldorf Airport and blocked an access route to the runway, further disrupting flights before operations could resume.
A Call for Immediate Action
In a powerful statement, Last Generation accused the German government of lacking a strategy to tackle the urgent climate crisis. They demanded immediate measures to cut emissions in the transportation sector, including the end of tax exemptions for airline kerosene.
However, senior German government officials condemned the protests and called for their immediate end.
Transport Minister Volker Wissing, who has consistently blocked proposals for cutting emissions from road and air travel, stated, “The Last Generation isn’t protecting the climate; they’re engaged in criminal activity.” Justice Minister Marco Buschmann, also a member of the Free Democratic Party, accused the activists of dividing society by preventing people from enjoying their “well-earned holidays.”
Last Generation maintains that their protests are peaceful, albeit disruptive. However, there have been instances where motorists facing delays due to road blockades have attacked the activists.
In May, German prosecutors raided the homes of several Last Generation members on suspicion of forming or supporting a criminal organization.
