Climate activist Senate Democrats spend heavily on luxurious private jet travel, sparking accusations of hypocrisy.
A Democratic Committee’s Hypocrisy on Climate Change
A top Democratic committee, known for its support of green energy policies to combat climate change, has been caught spending tens of thousands of dollars on gas-guzzling private jet travel, according to campaign finance disclosures.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), led by Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI), has been vocal about its efforts to combat climate change, even calling it a “crisis.” However, the committee spent over $59,000 in June on private jet travel with Advanced Aviation, a charter aircraft company known for its association with lawmakers and campaigns.
The Hypocrisy of Private Jet Payments
These private jet payments contradict the DSCC’s push for expansive climate plans that experts say harm the fossil fuels industry, which provides about 80% of the world’s energy supply. Private jets are significantly more polluting than commercial flights and trains, making them an environmentally unfriendly choice.
“They don’t practice what they preach,” says Thomas Pyle, president of the American Energy Alliance. “It’s hypocrisy. It’s all talk and no action with these folks.”
Indulgence in Luxury
Advanced Aviation offers a range of private jet options, including ultra-long-range jets that can accommodate up to 18 passengers and fly for up to 16 hours. The company even allows passengers to bring pets on board and showcases luxurious experiences on its website, such as travelers enjoying wine and fine cheeses.
The DSCC made multiple payments to Advanced Aviation, totaling approximately $224,000 between August 2021 and October 2022, all categorized as “travel expenses.”
It remains unclear where the committee was headed or the specific purpose of the private jet travel. The DSCC did not respond to requests for comment.
A Pattern of Hypocrisy
This revelation follows a previous report that Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) spent nearly $700,000 in campaign funds on private jet travel. Pelosi, a vocal advocate for phasing out fossil fuels, has faced criticism for her contradictory actions.
Democrats have faced increasing scrutiny for their extravagant spending on private jet travel while advocating for climate policies. During the 2022 midterm elections, top Democratic campaigns and political action committees spent at least $1.4 million on chartering private jets.
Even within the Biden administration, climate envoy John Kerry faced scrutiny for his family’s private jet travel, emitting a significant amount of carbon during the first 18 months of the administration.
These instances highlight the hypocrisy of Democratic leaders who claim to prioritize climate change while indulging in luxury and contributing to environmental harm.
