CIA watchdog to investigate ‘grossly mishandled’ sexual assault cases: Report

The inspector general for the CIA is reportedly looking to investigate the agency’s handling of sexual assault claims.

The CIA watchdog is opening the investigation after there have been claims the agency “grossly mishandled” sexual assault cases, according to CNN.

The “special review” has reportedly already begun, and the outlet reported that employees of the CIA have been interviewed by the watchdog.

The reported investigation comes as the CIA announced it hired Taleeta Jackson to lead the agency’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office.

“I am pleased that Dr. Jackson has joined our team and will bring her extensive experience to this crucial new role,” CIA Director Bill Burns said in a statement.

“I have personally met with several affected officers to hear their concerns and solicit their feedback on ways we can improve as an Agency. I have heard these concerns loud and clear, and Dr. Jackson’s appointment is just one of several steps we are taking to address them,” he added.

The agency has been the subject of criticism for its handling of sexual assault cases by both the Senate and House intelligence committees.

The House Intelligence Committee began its investigation into the allegations in April, and committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-OH) and ranking member Jim Himes (D-CT) said they are “fully committed to working with us on this issue.”

“Sexual assault is a heinous crime. Our committee is committed to addressing this matter and protecting those who are serving their country. We have been in contact with Director Burns, and he is fully committed to working with us on this issue,” the two told Politico in April.
