Christian Menefee beats longtime Democrat Al Green in runoff
Christian Rep. Christian Menefee (D-TX) defeated longtime Rep. Al Green (D-TX) in Tuesday’s Democratic primary runoff after Texas redistricting placed the two in the same seat. When the Associated Press called the race, Menefee led 68.9% to Green’s 31.1%.
The contest emphasized age and generational change: Green, 78, has been in the House as 2005 and is known for long floor speeches and efforts targeting President donald Trump, including a high-profile interruption that led to his censure. Menefee, 38, was sworn into the chamber this year after winning a special election to replace late Rep. Sylvester Turner and previously worked as a Harris County attorney.
Menefee also edged the March primary (46% to Green’s 44.2%). Rep. Jasmine Crockett endorsed Menefee, and he is considered favored to win the general election in the district’s strongly Democratic landscape.
