Chris Coons hospitalized after car crash in Delaware

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) was involved in a multivehicle crash in Sussex County, Delaware, on Sunday afternoon, sending him to a local hospital to be treated for injuries, the senator announced in a social media post on Sunday evening.

Coons, 62, was taken to Beebe Hospital in Lewes, Delaware, for treatment. He was later released and announced that he was expected to “make a full and swift recovery.”

“Earlier today, a Delaware driver experienced a medical incident and collided with several cars, including one in which I was a passenger,” Coons said in the post. “I was transported to Beebe Hospital and treated for minor injuries. I’m now home and expected to make a full and swift recovery.”

Details and specifications of Coons’s exact injuries were not released. Coons said that no one was “seriously injured” in the collision. He thanked the first responders who assisted him and the other crash victims in a second post on X. No information was reportedly provided about the other people injured in the crash.

“I’m deeply grateful to the first responders for their prompt and professional response, including the Lewes Police Department, Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, and Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, as well as the capable doctors and nurses at Beebe Hospital, where I received excellent care,” Coons said. “I’m feeling relieved and blessed that by all accounts no one was seriously injured during the crash.”

Coons has served as a senator since November 2010, after winning a special election to replace Joe Biden, who resigned to become vice president after then-Sen. Barack Obama won the 2008 presidential election. Coons replaced Sen. Edward Kaufman, a Democrat, who was appointed by then. Gov. Ruth Ann Minner to initially replace Biden.

Coons is a ranking member on the Senate Ethics Committee, as well as the Senate Appropriations Committee, the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and the Senate Judiciary Committee.

On June 12, Coons announced he was running for reelection and a fourth term in the Senate.
