“I’m sick and tired of it,” Roy passionately declared. “I didn’t come here for second place. I didn’t come here for more excuses. I didn’t come here to have the speaker of the House assume that position and in 17 days passing a continuing resolution of the floor of this House through suspension of the rules.”
Some Republicans drew parallels between Johnson’s actions and the circumstances that led to former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) removal from his position. McCarthy’s willingness to work with Democrats to fund the government disregarded the concerns of his own party members who prioritized spending issues. While members of the House Freedom Caucus expressed frustration with Johnson’s approach, some were open to giving him a chance to prove himself.
“Friends, this is not the same situation as his predecessor,” stated Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC). “I realize Speaker Johnson has an incredibly difficult job and deserves some runway and grace.”
