Chinese Man Charged with Illegally Voting in US Election and Trying to Frame Someone Else

A Chinese national living in Massachusetts was arrested on charges of voter fraud and impersonation. He reportedly registered to vote online, using another man’s identity, and cast an early ballot in the 2024 presidential election.Additionally, he allegedly submitted fraudulent immigration documents to revoke the other man’s legal permanent resident status. The suspect had previously been roommates with the victims and had access to their personal details. He also sent anonymous tips to immigration authorities blaming the other man for illegal voting. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine per charge.

A Chinese national living in Massachusetts was arrested Wednesday and charged with fraudulently registering to vote and casting a ballot in another person’s name, federal prosecutors said.

Yupeng Sun, 33, is accused of impersonating another Chinese national who was a legal permanent resident in Massachusetts.

In a Wednesday news release, the Department of Justice said Sun submitted a voter registration application online on Oct. 10, 2024.

He allegedly used the other man’s identity and then submitted an early voting ballot three weeks later.

The ballot was cast early in the other man’s name in the 2024 presidential election, according to the DOJ.

The alleged scheme did not stop with the election. Prosecutors said Sun also impersonated the man and his wife in immigration documents.

The Justice Department said fraudulent forms were submitted to Citizenship and Immigration Services in April 2024.

Those forms allegedly sought to have the couple abandon their legal permanent resident status.

When the couple returned from an international trip in June 2024, their green cards were confiscated at Boston’s Logan International Airport, prosecutors said.

WBTS-TV, the NBC affiliate in Boston, reported that the couple later successfully petitioned the Boston Immigration Court to restore their green cards.

The criminal complaint said Sun was a former roommate who had access to the couple’s personal information because Sun had helped them apply for insurance.

They had been roommates from 2021 until May 2023, according to WBTS.

The living arrangement ended after Sun was arrested on an assault and battery charge involving the adult daughter of the man he is accused of impersonating.

Federal prosecutors said Sun later submitted anonymous tips to immigration authorities accusing the other man of illegally voting, despite not being a U.S. citizen.

Those tips were sent to Homeland Security Investigations and USCIS in April and May 2026, according to the DOJ.

WTBS reported that investigators later questioned the man about the alleged illegal voting.

He said Sun may have cast the ballot as retaliation for the earlier arrest, according to the report.

Sun faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each charge if convicted, prosecutors said.
