Chinese Internet Users Mock China’s ChatGPT Copycat

Chinese netizens mocked Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) companies for their recent launch of ChatGPT copycats.

Despite the fact that ChatGPT was not yet available to Chinese Internet users, the public launch has caused a stir in China.

ChatGPT is expected to be an office tool and a learning tool. It can analyze and learn human languages to conduct conversations with people and complete tasks like writing emails, video scripts and translating.

There has been intense debate about whether advanced AI products can gradually control human behavior and replace certain jobs. This could lead to an increase in unemployment.

ChatGPT was banned in Hong Kong and mainland China because the AI-powered app can discuss almost any topic with humans, even sensitive political issues.

Chinese Copycats

China’s technology firms aren’t willing to fall behind in OpenAI’s new challenge.

Online technology companies such as Baidu, Tencent and Xiaomi are just a few of the many that have started R&D in this field.

Mockery from Chinese Netizens

ChatGTP is a great way for Chinese netizens and tech companies to mock the totalitarian rule in China by playing with chatbots and Chinese chatbots.

ChatGPT is a chatroom that allows users to circumvent China’s internet blocking. The replies have been hilarious and many have had to laugh.

Chinese netizens asked: “When will China unify Taiwan?” ChatGPT has replied “I don’t know which region will be occupied, but eventually, it will be the advanced system that unifies the backward, the civilized that unifies the barbaric.”

Baidu’s copycat was tested by netizens and they shared their experiences via Chinese social media.

“After trying Baidu’s copycat ChatGPT, [I found] that its ‘awesomeness’ lies in the fact that not only the input text cannot include any censored words, the generated answers cannot have any censored words either,” One user wrote.

Another person shared his concerns: “How can Chinese firms compete in this race … the number of forbidden words is simply too large.”

A netizen named Jia Jia commented: “In a country where all Internet content is manually reviewed and censored, won’t the artificial intelligence develop an artificial’ intellectual disability’ in the end?”

People also mock Chinese tech companies for boasting that they are the best technology in the entire world.

One netizen pointed out the greatest setback for AI-powered chatbots is China’s censorship.

“The main obstacle is [the authorities’] fear of ChatGPT talking without restraint,” He wrote. “The large language model is a complete black box, as you cannot guarantee that the chatbot will never come up with anything taboo.
