Chicago News Crew Robbed at Gunpoint While Reporting on Robberies
A Chicago television news crew reporting on a string of robberies ended up robbed themselves after they were accosted at gunpoint by three armed men wearing ski masks.
According to Spanish-language station Univision Chicago, the incident occurred just before 5 a.m. on Monday in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. The reporter and photographer were filming when three masked men brandishing firearms approached them and robbed them, taking their television camera and personal belongings.
“They were approached with guns and robbed. Mainly it was personal items, and they took a camera,”

The stolen camera contained the footage they had shot for a story about the robberies in the West Town community, which was supposed to air on the morning news. Unfortunately, the story never made it on the air.
Chicago police identified the victims as a 28-year-old man and a 42-year-old man. The robbers arrived in a gray sedan and black SUV, took the items, and fled in their vehicles. No injuries were reported, and the suspects remain at large.
To protect their privacy, Univision Chicago has chosen not to disclose the names of the reporter and photographer. However, they assured that the team is working together and supporting each other.
This incident marks the second robbery involving a Chicago news crew this month. Earlier, a WLS-TV photographer was assaulted and robbed while preparing to cover a news conference on Chicago’s West Side.
The National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians Local 41, which represents TV photographers in Chicago, has expressed concern about the growing safety threats faced by journalists. They emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of those who cover the news.
“Our news photographers and reporters provide a very important public service in keeping our community informed. We are committed to making sure that their safety comes first,” said Raza Siddiqui, president of the union local.
Mr. Siddiqui also mentioned that some news stations affiliated with the union are planning additional measures to enhance the safety of their crews.
