Chicago Ends the Year with More Than 700 Murders

Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Chicago will end 2022 with at least 723 homicides, another tragic figure showing the city is far from ending its bloodbath epidemic.

Meanwhile, Chicago’s motor vehicle theft was 95 percent in 2022 compared to 2021.

Theft was up 50%, burglary was up 10%, and theft was up 10%.

2021 proved the deadliest year for Chicago, with 797 homicides – the largest in a quarter of a century.

Chicago’s 723 homicides in 2022 are a slight drop from 2021 but still represent a dangerous city, according to some city leaders.

Susan Less (former deputy mayor for safety) said that gun violence in the area has started to decrease.

Less said: “[We] should not be patting ourselves on the back when the … absolute number of shootings and homicides is so high that people are afraid to do their daily functions.”

“We are still in a crisis,” Less said.

Others, however, were more optimistic.

Jeff Asher is a crime analyst. “It’s a decline, and it’s significant.”

“Not every city saw declines. Not every city saw declines as big as Chicago, which still has a lot of murders and shootings.”

As The Chicago Suntimes noted, the police budget will swell to nearly $2 billion next year — up from the $1.66 billion that former Mayor Rahm Emanuel set aside in his 2019 budget.

The increase in anti-violence spending was caused by the federal stimulus money that the federal government provided to the cities, counties, and states in order to avoid a deeper economic crash in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Fox 32 reported that a man entered a blue Honda CRV and pointed a gun towards the woman as she was walking her dog.
